目录· Beautiful places· Family· Shopping· Eating and food· Travelling· School· Adventure· Newspapers· Sport Part 2 Take one minute to prepare a talk on the following subject. When was the last time you did something in a hurry? Um… when was it?...Let me have a think…I guess it was probably um… a few weeks ago, when I was on holiday, and I had booked a taxi to arrive at the place where I was staying, at about noon-ish, and I still had some clearing up to do, you know, I didn’t want to leave the place in a mess. So yeah, I was basically in a hurry tidying everything up and getting all my things packed before the taxi arrived. 2. Do you like to finish things quickly? Yeah I do, cos I really don’t like things to hang over me, you know, it’s just not a nice feeling when you’ve got stuff to do hanging at the back of your mind. So I like to get stuff done as quickly as I can,but saying that, I still want to do it well of course! I mean, I’m not gonna do something haphazardly just to get it done quickly, I still wanna make sure I do it well! 3. What kinds of things do you never do in a hurry? It’s an interesting question!... I’ve never really thought about that one! What kinds of things will I never do in a hurry?...um… I suppose things I would never do in a hurry would be important things, like coursework which counts towards my final grade, and what else?...I’m kind of hard pressed to think! Um… oh yeah, getting to the airport to catch a flight! You know, I’ll always give myself lots of time to get there, even if it means I arrive at the airport several hours in advance, cos it just gives me peace of mind. I mean, if you miss a flight, then your holiday’s probably gone down the drain, so it can be pretty disastrous! 4. Why do people make mistakes more easily when they are in a hurry? Um… well thinking about it, I suppose it’s simply because when people are in a hurry, they’re not really thinking clearly. You know, their mind’s kind of um.. how can I put it… I guess you could say flustered, thinking about lots of things at the same time, and not really being focused. So in that state of mind, I think you’d agree it’s easy to overlook things, especially small details, which will likely lead to mistakes being made! What’s your favorite colour and why? Green. Most definitely green. I love the colour green as it reminds me of nature, the countryside, trees, valleys of lush vegetation, mountains and forests. Green, all shades of green, makes me think of the wonders of the natural world. lush vegetation:繁茂的植被 2.What colours are the walls of the rooms in your home? The walls of my home are fairly simple, really. They are a sort of cream colour, just off-white. They look attractive, though, because there’s a lot of framed pictures on them. I think this is the best way to decorate a fairly simple small city flat, really. 3.Do you prefer dark colours or bright colours? For the home, I definitely prefer lighter and brighter colours. I think they make a space look larger and more uplifting. But for certain types of places I think rich, dark colours can be very attractive. Like an old restaurant or a cinema or places like this where you want to feel the walls closing in around you more and a really strong and perhaps elegant emotional atmosphere, but generally I prefer bright colours for a home, that’s for sure. uplifting:振奋人心的 4.Do any colours have a special meaning in your culture? I think red has always been a special colour in China, from the days of ancient China and the dragon symbols to the modern day China, red has always been a symbol of strength, prosperity, hope and honour for the Chinese. Most definitely red and gold are colours which have a very special meaning in my culture and deep cultural roots. prosperity:繁荣 题目解析: 本题属于新题首次出现,而且还是一道略微有难度的题目。 What is the decoration like in your home? My home is decorated in a fairly simply manner, actually. The walls are plain white, the floors are a sort of marble, and the doors are made of wood. There are quite a few framed pictures on the walls, nice, thick, floral curtains, and some very tasteful and comfortable furniture. We don’t really have many ornaments in our home, but there are some plants on the window ledge. plain:朴素的,不加修饰的 marble:大理石 framed pictures:镶框图片 floral curtain:带有碎花图案的窗帘 tasteful furniture:雅致的家具(一定要记住tasteful和tasty是完全不同意思的两个单词!) ornament:装饰 window ledge:窗台 2.What kind of decoration would you like to have? I’d like to have more old furniture, like I’ve seen in a lot of European homes. I love old wooden furniture and antiques, so ideally I’d like to have some older Chinese furniture and decorate my home in a more traditional style. I like history and so this would be my preferred choice of interior décor. antique:古董 interior décor:内部装饰 3.Do Chinese people like redecorating their homes? I am not sure really. Some people like it, others see it as a chore, really. It can be difficult to decorate a home, and also quite expensive. Deciding on what colors to combine, what furniture to buy and things like this can be a bit of a hassle. But some people are very good at it! chore:日常事务 hassle:麻烦 4.What’s your favorite color when you decorate your home? My favourite colors for the home would be lighter shades. Though I like bold, dark colours, these often make a home feel small and cramped, so for the home I usually go for pastel shades that ‘open up’ the rooms and make them look more bright and spacious. Perhaps a light peach colour, or even just a plain off-white or light cream colour for the walls. lighter shades:淡色系(light colors的另外一种说法) pastel shade:柔和的彩色 (pastel的意思是彩色粉笔) cramped和spacious是一组反义词,前者是狭窄的,后者是宽敞的 题目解析: 本题属于新题首次出现,而且具有一定的难度。 Have you ever visited a farm? Yes, I have visited farms a few times actually. There is an organic vegetable farm just outside Beijing that I go to with my family sometimes. You can eat at a little restaurant there and pick your own vegetables, and learn a little bit about the techniques of organic farming and the health benefits of eating organic fruit and veg. I find this interesting and a refreshing change from the city. organic farming:有机农业,最近非常热门的一个热点词汇 2.What can you do on a farm? Well, it depends if you work there or are a visitor! As a visitor, there are a few farms which you can visit. In fact, organic farms are growing in popularity these days, and have become places where people, some people, choose to visit for a weekend day-trip. You can pick your own vegetables there, learn a bit about farming, and enjoy the fresh air and learn a bit about the good sides of country life. 3.Do you think farming is important? Farming is absolutely essential. I mean, if you think about it, especially in a country the size of China, there are a lot of mouths to feed, so fruit, vegetables and meat all come from farms. And so farming is really the backbone of a country, because everyone needs good, healthy food to eat! backbone:支柱 4.Are there any farms near your hometown? There are a few farms on the outskirts of my city, yes. In fact, there’s quite a lot. Arable farms -those that grow only crops, vegetables and some fruits, as well as cattle farms – farms that rear cows, sheep and pigs for food. You pass by the farms if you’re driving out of the city on the highway, or on the train. on the outskirts:在郊区 arable farms:种植农场 cattle farms:养牛场 题目解析: 本题属于旧题回库,不过是一道很有年份的旧题了,时隔多年再次出现,属于抽象理念类的话题,答题的时候注意内容不要太空泛。 What do you think makes people feel happy? I think a relatively comfortable life, a loving family, and a good work-life balance are the keys to general happiness in life really. I think some people also need a fairly active social life and a couple of hobbies, interests, or sporting activities too, to feel really fulfilled. 2.Do you think happiness is important? Of course, happiness is important, because if you are happy you are motivated, and if you are motivated you achieve things, and you become a positive person who spreads positivity to other people around you. Positive, happy people are great to be around and make us feel life is really worth living, even in hard times. 3.Can you tell me a happy experience that recently happened in your life? I get happiness from fairly simple things, to be honest. A time I recently felt happy was after the new year when I went for a big dinner with my friends in a new restaurant in my town. We ate a lot of really good food, we chatted, and drank some beers, and afterwards we went to dance. I enjoy that kind of thing from time to time, and this occasion was especially fun! 4.Do you think money plays an important role in people’s happiness? Money plays a role in one’s fundamental state of comfort in life, and enables one to do the basic things in life without too much struggle or stress. So, money is important to a point, but not as important as some people claim it is. One can also be obsessed with money and focus on it too much. And this is not always the root of true happiness. be obsessed with:对… Do you like visiting museums? Why? Sometimes I enjoy visiting museums, yes. I think one can learn a lot from museums, especially modern museums which tend to have more multimedia and interactive exhibits. These kinds of things make learning about history and culture a lot more interesting and engaging, especially for younger people. multimedia and interactive exhibits:多媒体和互动性较强的展品 engaging:这个词是interesting的替换词,意思是吸引人的。 2.How often do you visit museums? I don’t visit museums very often, to be honest. If I go on holiday to another city or town then I do enjoy visiting the regional or national museum there, but generally I don’t go to museums as a habit, really. 3.Are there any museums in your hometown? There are a couple of interesting museums actually. My father was a geologist, so we often went to a museum of geology which had some fascinating exhibits about stones, mountains and fossils. There’s also a national museum in my hometown, which to be honest is a bit boring and not very interesting unless you want to read a lot of information and look at hundreds of old photos and vases. 4.Do you think there should be more museums in your hometown? I think there are enough museums in my town. I think, however, they should improve them and make them more interesting by installing more interactive exhibits and multimedia and things that make learning more fun and engaging for younger people, though. 1.Describe a live sports event you watched before. You should say: When it happened Where it took place Who you watched it with And explain how you felt about this experience I have seen a lot of live sports, actually, because I’m a big sports fan. But the live event that I liked the most was a football game I saw at the stadium in Beijing. It was a huge game, and lots of people went to see it. It was an especially exciting atmosphere, and it was the first time I had been in the crowd at a proper football match. Usually the live sports I go to see are mainly basketball and martial arts contests. Football is a whole different atmosphere and the crowds go really wild with excitement – that’s a key part of football culture really. I went with a few classmates from university and my brother. We got really into the spirit of the game. I have often enjoyed the whole atmosphere of games like football, and to be honest, though I am not a huge fan of the game itself, I came to understand after watching this game live in the stadium, just why so many people follow football and get really really into it. There’s a very strong fan-culture associated with the game, and people get incredibly passionate about it, chanting football songs, cheering on their team, shouting at the opposition players and things like this. Sometimes it can get a bit too passionate and quite aggressive in a way, too. I’m not sure it’s really my kind of game, really, but it was a very exciting experience and one that I might repeat from time to time, especially if there is a big match on and my friends are also going. We went to a nice restaurant afterwards, ate lots of great food, drank a few beers and talked about the game. It was definitely an occasion I remember very fondly. I’d love to see a game in the UK, like Liverpool United, or a big team like that. Describe a sport you watched before and you want to try. martial arts:武术 go really wild with excitement:形容人群极度兴奋激动 chant:反复唱 2.Describe a piece of international news you have just recently heard. You should say: What the news was about When and where you heard it What you were doing when you heard the news And explain how you felt about this piece of news Generally, I find the news quite depressing, so I avoid following most national and international and political news, or at least I don’t pay much attention to it. However, I really enjoy following scientific news and news related to space and space technology. Recently I read an article online in a magazine which was about space and the discovery of a ‘new’ planet in our solar system. A dark planet that doesn’t show up on more space telescopes. I found this article really interesting and afterwards I found a documentary about it online and watched that, too. When I first read about this discovery I think I was just lying in bed reading or sitting on the subway, I can’t really remember exactly what I was doing at the time. But this is when I usually read such things – on the way to work, while commuting, or at the end of the day before I go to sleep. I usually actively search for news about space and science, and sometimes geography and the environment, so I frequently come across interesting scientific articles about these kinds of things. Then, if one catches my interest, I dig deeper and try to find out more about it, like a documentary online or more articles in specialist magazines. Because I majored in science, I am into these kinds of things, and like to follow them up and keep up to date with the latest discoveries. I am also really interested in science fiction, as well, so I guess my hobbies and interests tend to be related to the general field of science and exploration. Because there is a renewed interest in space at the moment, I think the next twenty years will be really fascinating in terms of discoveries in space – the Chinese have just sent another rover to the moon, Elon Musk is launching multiple rockets into space, and there are plans to even send people to Mars. So, I think that this is an area which will be very exciting in the not so distant future. telescope:望远镜 catch my interest:吸引兴趣 specialist magazine:专业杂志 keep up to date with:密切关注 3.Describe a skill that you think you can teach other people. You should say: What it is Who you can teach How you can teach others And explain how you feel about teaching others A skill which I think I would be able to teach other people is public speaking and debate. In university I joined a public speaking and debate society organized by one of our teachers. I bought a couple of books about public speaking, which also, at the time, included some CDs of famous speakers and their speeches – Martyn Luther King, John F. Kennedy, and so on. I became really inspired with this, and I also enjoyed the debate club. Both of these skills are quite important if you want to enter into the academic world and succeed. Often you have to construct very logical arguments based on evidence and support your opinions strongly with examples and reasoning. This is not something that comes naturally to everyone, and I think it takes practice and patience and a certain degree of knowledge and learning. I feel very enthusiastic about teaching others and I think it’s really exciting when you have a skill that you are confident about passing on to others. I also believe that in teaching, you also develop yourself too, because you learn a lot from working out the best way to structure classes, workshops and seminars, and through doing so you improve your own skills. I also believe that Chinese students have an aptitude for public speaking because we have a strong culture of performances and performing in front of others – so I think this really means that students here get really engaged when it comes to preparing speeches and trying their best when performing for the interest of an audience. I also believe that in future public speaking will become more and more important - in our global and fast-changing society, the importance of communicating ideas and beliefs across cultures, with logic and clear explanation will become greater and greater. So, I think this is not only a skill that I would be able to teach, and enjoy teaching, but also one which is important and very useful. Describe a time when you taught something to a young child. reasoning:推理,论证 have an aptitude for:对… 4.Describe an art exhibition you have visited. You should say: What it was about When and where it was held What you saw in this exhibition And explain how you felt about this exhibition I once saw an art exhibition in the national gallery in my home city. It was an exhibition from a modern artist from Guizhou. There were several examples of painting, sculpture, and a room with a full art installation in it. It really stands out in my memory because everything was centred around the concept of light, and lights and patterns in myriad colours were projected over the artworks from projectors on the ceilings of the various exhibition halls. It was a stunning exhibition and quite hard to describe in words really. It’s not easy to describe modern art, even in one’s own language, let alone in a second language! But, anyway, it was exciting and really made me think. The thing I really enjoy about some of this more abstract, modern art, is that it provokes a host of interesting thoughts and inspirations about life. I really find that quite enjoyable because I’m quite into philosophy and culture, so things that inspire these kinds of thoughts, I get really excited about. I do find some modern art just too abstract or too ridiculous, though, but this particular exhibition was very popular with a lot of people I know, even people who are not so into modern art. The theme of nature and flowers, projected across quite industrial sculptures and paintings, provided a very curious and interesting contrast and made me contemplate how our daily lives, especially in cities, are quite dominated by machines, and how it’s so easy to forget about nature and the importance of the natural world for sustaining our life. I bought a few postcards from the exhibition and even got the chance to talk a little bit with the artist who was there at the time being interviewed by a several media outlets. There are few art exhibitions I’ve enjoyed as much as this one. I found it was particularly special and unique. Describe a museum/gallery that you have been to.
